APN VPN

Your own private APN/VPN

An APN, or Access Point Name, is an access point for connecting a device to the (mobile) Internet. The APN can be accessed via the settings of your device and often consists of a name, type, username and password. The APN makes sure that the device knows to which network to connect and how to do this. This APN can be set up by the provider and that way extra security measures can be taken, fixed IP addresses can be issued or there is the option to block certain functions or websites/apps (blacklisting).
In many cases the APN will be automatically set up by the device after you have added a SIM card. So you do not have to do anything. These SIM cards contain a standard public APN from the provider. An example of this is the standard public APN of KPN (basic Internet). This APN contains an active firewall and NAT, which means that you cannot take over the device (remote desktop) or use a VPN. Another public VPN from KPN (advanced Internet) does not contain any firewall and so is unsecured, but can be used with a VPN or fixed IP addresses. Thus, each APN serves a different purpose.

Public or private APN/VPN

There are two different types of APNs, namely the public APN and the private APN. A public APN is an APN which can be used by anyone and is often suited to different purposes. The APN can have extra additions like a firewall or a fixed IP address, but often goes no further than that.
A private APN is an APN which can only be used by one organisation or group and is set up specifically for these users. With a private VPN all devices can be connected securely to your own networks and they immediately have the programmed security rules. A private APN is completely customisable and therefore offers great security benefits.

Custom Private APN VPN

A private APN uses a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to securely forward the traffic from the SIM cards. A VPN is an encrypted connection between the SIM cards and a VPN server. The SIM cards connect to the VPN server and the VPN server connects to the Internet.
In this way a direct connection with the device is impossible and that protects it from, for example, hackers or other external parties. A private APN uses a VPN to gain access to the Internet. This can be done in two ways namely via an Internet VPN or an IP-VPN. Both options have pros and cons, depending on your situation. The most preferred option is the Internet VPN because it offers the highest security.

With your own private APN/VPN your company can safely and easily use mobile Internet.

You can add your specific wishes with a custom private APN/VPN.
Private APN & Internet VPN

Internet VPN is the most preferred VPN option and is usually referred to when talking about VPN. The devices make a secure connection to the VPN server, after which the server connects to the Internet.

Private APN & IP-VPN

An IP-VPN, unlike an Internet VPN, is a closed, secure connection between the device and the mobile network. This connection is made without using the Internet. The device is connected to the mobile network via the private APN and the data traffic is delivered to the server through the IP VPN and a private network.

Fixed IP

With a private APN/VPN it becomes possible to assign fixed IP addresses to SIM cards. Unlike the normal dynamic IP addresses (which change continuously) a fixed IP address always stays the same. This makes it possible to access the device remotely or to register it in software programmes.
